Pigtown Resident’s Garden Wins Contest

Robert Bedard from Pigtown was named The Baltimore Sun Garden Contest Winner for his garden in a 12 ft. lot adjacent to his home. From the article:

“During the recent unrest, Baltimore was severely criticized for its vacant alleys, boarded-up and or vacant houses, rubble and trash-strewn alleys and public areas,” he wrote. “Baltimore took it laying down without even explaining the many programs available to citizens to correct some of those problems. … My garden may serve to highlight the many available service the City DOES provide to citizens.”

Soon after moving to Baltimore last year, Bedard took advantage of the city’s Adopt-a -Lot program and acquired the lot next door to his house. It was small – just 12 feet wide — and had a thin layer of soil covering the rubble left from a demolished rowhouse.

Digital Harbor Foundation Receives $7,000 in Ikea Furniture

Technical.ly Baltimore reported that the Digital Harbor Foundation in Federal Hill received $7,000 in Ikea furniture through winning an online contest. From the article:

The Digital Harbor Foundation won an Ikea makeover from the furniture company’s Baltimore store after coming out on top of an online vote earlier this year. Known as the Ikea Life Improvement Challenge, DHF ended up ahead of the Living Classrooms Foundation and the Boys and Girls Club of Metropolitan Baltimore.

On Thursday, Ikea reps began the process of building and installing new furniture at the Tech Center.

Storage for kids’ bags and other items is needed because of the growth of students participating in DHF programs. Executive Director Andrew Coy said participation in the Foundation’s programs has grown from 470 students to 2,500 in a year.
